Donating a Car Seat in Dublin: Why Some Organisations Refuse Them — And Why Let’s Match Mums Still Accepts Them Carefully

Many parents in Dublin are surprised to learn that some charities and organisations refuse donated car seats — even when they appear to be in excellent condition.

At Let’s Match Mums, we understand why these concerns exist. Safety should always come first when it comes to children.

However, we also see another heartbreaking reality every day: perfectly usable car seats ending up thrown away while many families urgently need them.

Why Some Organisations Refuse Used Car Seats

Unlike clothing or toys, car seats are safety products.

Many charities avoid accepting second-hand car seats because:

  • They may have been involved in a previous accident

  • Internal damage is not always visible

  • Parts or screws may be missing

  • Safety standards may have changed

  • Materials can weaken over time

  • Some seats may have been improperly stored or cleaned with harsh chemicals

Because organisations cannot always verify a seat’s full history, many choose not to accept them at all.

Why Let’s Match Mums Carefully Accepts Some Car Seats

At Let’s Match Mums, sustainability and practical support are at the heart of what we do.

It genuinely breaks our hearts to see high-quality car seats in great condition being discarded when many mums and families still need them.

For some families — especially those living in Direct Provision or facing financial hardship — buying a brand-new car seat simply may not be possible.

Even families without cars may still need car seats for:

  • Taxi journeys

  • Hospital visits

  • Doctor appointments

  • Emergency travel

  • Trips with friends or relatives

For many parents, access to a safe car seat can make everyday travel possible.

The Conditions for Donating a Car Seat

Because safety is our absolute priority, Let’s Match Mums does not accept just any seat. To protect the children in our network, we enforce a strict vetting process. We only accept car seats that strictly meet all of the following criteria:

  • Zero Crash History: The seat must have absolutely never been involved in any vehicle collision, no matter how minor.

  • Current EU Standards (R129 / i-Size): We can only accept seats bearing the orange EU approval label marking it as ECE R129 or i-Size compliant. Due to EU regulations, we can no longer accept older R44 models.

  • Under 5 Years Old: The seat must be less than 5 years from its manufacture date (stamped on the plastic shell) to ensure the integrity of the materials.

  • 100% Complete: The seat must include all original straps, padding, newborn inserts, and the original manufacturer's instruction booklet.

  • Perfect Condition: No cracks in the plastic frame, no frayed harness straps, and no history of being cleaned with harsh chemical bleach.

Supporting Families While Reducing Waste

Many baby products are only used for a short period before being stored away or thrown out.

When safe, reusable baby items remain in circulation longer, it helps reduce unnecessary waste while also supporting families who may be struggling quietly.

At Let’s Match Mums, we believe sustainability and community care can go hand in hand — as long as safety always remains the priority.

Sometimes, something no longer needed in one home can make a huge difference in another.
