Why Babies Always Prefer Household Items Over Toys
If you’re a mum, you’ve probably had this exact moment.
You buy a lovely new toy for your little one, maybe something colourful, sensory, and “perfect for their age”…
…and they crawl straight past it to grab the TV remote.
Or the wooden spoon.
Or the empty tissue box.
Or, somehow, the cardboard box the toy came in 😭
Honestly, babies have a special talent for ignoring the thing we just spent money on and choosing the one thing they absolutely should not be playing with.
And funny enough, there’s actually a reason for it.
Why Babies Love Household Items
Babies are naturally curious.
They love exploring the things they see us use every day because, to them, these objects feel part of the real world.
A remote control has buttons to press.
A wooden spoon makes noise when banged on the floor.
A Tupperware lid somehow becomes the most exciting thing in the room.
It’s not that they don’t like toys.
It’s just that everyday objects often feel more interesting because they are new, different, and part of what they see mum and dad using.
Some Classic Baby Favourites 😂
Every mum in will probably recognise at least one of these:
• the TV remote
• wooden spoons
• empty wipes packets
• Tupperware containers
• cardboard boxes
• kitchen drawers
• your phone (always your phone)
Some babies seem to believe the most expensive toy in the room is the one you’re currently using.
So What Happens To All The Toys?
This is the part that feels very familiar for so many mums.
The toys are still lovely.
Still in great condition.
Sometimes barely touched.
But your little one has simply moved on.
Suddenly they’re sitting in baskets, toy boxes, corners of the room, or packed away in storage.
Too good to sit there.
Too lovely to waste.
Let Another Little One in Enjoy Them
One of the loveliest things about Lets Match Mums is knowing those toys can still bring joy to another baby nearby.
A toy your little one ignored in favour of the kitchen whisk might become another child’s absolute favourite.
Passing toys on means less clutter at home and a little bit of joy for another family who may really need it.
And somehow, it feels easier to let them go when you know they’re going to another mum and baby who will love them 💛
